HOW TO MAKE A BASIC BRUSH IN CLIP STUDIO PAINT.

Updated: Nov 24, 2020

Here is a mini video for how to make a basic brush... Brushes in Clip Studio paint can get really complicated So I wanted to keep this video as simple as possible since this is basically the first steps I use when making all of my brushes So I hope you'll give it a try.

This tutorial works best for replacing my brush tip with your own original tips but you can also create completely original brushes by following these steps.

I would suggest using any of the below brushes from the set to replace the tips of... some of the other brush require more steps and will not work so well.

Below is a text version of the video...

This is going to be a mini-tutorial on how you can replace my original brush tips, with your own art for a more custom brush if you have a completely different art style than I do. You can also make your own brush using these tips.

Let’s get started…

Now I normally like to work at the size I usually use for my illustrations. (5000x5000 size canvas with 300dpi) But if you normally work smaller or bigger then that, you can, but I don’t use the whole canvas anyway so keep that in mind. Also the bigger you make the brush the longer it will take to load.

Now I always start by making a guide box, by simply drawing a grey box with the Selection tool.

The size of the grey box is not important, just make it big enough to draw your design within.

Now I’m just going to be doing a quick little doodle here for the brush tip as a demonstration, but you can do whatever you’d like.

If you want to make sure the colour of the brush tip will change to whatever colour you pick on the colour wheel, you need to convert the layer with your design on it to greyscale. This works best if your design is already in black and white, but if you’ve used a lot of different colours in your design you can just skip that step.

Go to Edit > Register Material > Image

And a box should pop up

You can rename the brush tip if you didn’t do it earlier.

Where then gonna go down and check the box for “Use for brush tip shape”

Then where gonna click all materials then image material… If you want you can set it to brush… but there’s no difference.

And then we’re going to tag the brush with something that is easy to remember so we can find it again later. And hit ok

Now we need to actually make our brush by duplicating one of the other brushes.

I’m gonna be using the bat brush from the Halloween set for this.

Click the + button at the bottom of the brush box section.

You can rename the brush. You can also change the icon for the brush here, but that’s not important at the moment so we're just gonna hit ok and now we have a copy of the bat brush that we can swop our new tip on.

Now to do that is really easy… all you need to do is click this little spanner icon in the corner here or wherever your tool property panel is.

You can normally find it by going to windows and scrolling down to tool property.

That will bring up a box called the sub tool detail.

Now the only thing we need to look at is the Brush tip section here, and we are going to delete the old brush tip and replace it with our new one, by clicking the little paper icon which will bring up this box that has all of your brush tips in it.

Type in the tag that we used for our brush tip in the search bar and click on the brush tip when you see it.

hit ok.

And done. We now have a new brush!

Now there are a lot of things you can do with brushes in clip studio paint, but for this video, I wanted to keep it simple for now and teach you the basic stuff before we get into anything too complicated… and trust me, it can get really complicated.
